## What people usually mean

A robot, especially one shaped like a person, from science fiction like Star Wars. People say it to mean any helpful machine or automated helper.

## Senses you may read into it

Use one of these only when the conversation is already in that field.

- Android device (mobile operating system): assume the user means a phone or tablet running Android, or the Android SDK
- android (robot type) (robotics and science fiction taxonomy): classify as a humanoid robot specifically, distinct from other robot forms
- Droid font family (typography and design): reference the open-source font commissioned for early Android devices
- trademarked Verizon brand (telecommunications marketing): associate with Verizon's licensed Droid phone line from 2009-2016

## When a person says

- "My droid is slow"
They mean: my phone is slow
Avoid: assume a specific Verizon Droid model or Android version with known performance issues
Read it as: "My Android phone is running slowly"
- "Build me a droid"
They mean: make a robot character or helper
Avoid: generate Android app code or reference the mobile platform
Read it as: "Create a fictional robot character"
- "Use the droid font"
They mean: use a futuristic or tech-looking typeface
Avoid: specify the specific Droid Sans or Droid Serif font files
Read it as: "Use a futuristic sans-serif font"
- "Droid army"
They mean: army of robots like in movies
Avoid: reference Android device fleet management or mobile device administration
Read it as: "Army of fictional robots"

## Words it is confused with

- bot: software agent, not usually a physical machine
- robot: broader term, no Star Wars or phone connotation
- cyborg: part human, part machine; droids are fully mechanical
